Results
Intermediate Championship Round 1 Shamrocks 2-17 to 2-15 Stradbally.
Our intermediates enjoyed a hard fought victory over Stradbally in Fraher Field on Sunday. It was an exciting encounter and the game was in the balance right up to the final whistle. The game was nip and tuck at the start with both sides scoring mostly from frees. After 15 minutes, when the first water break was called, Shamrocks led by 2 points on a score 0-08 to 0-06. Shamrocks enjoyed a purple patch immediately after the water break and within a short period had 11 points on the scoreboard. However, Stradbally came back into it towards the end of the first half and netted their first goal just before half-time. The teams were level at half-time with Shamrocks 0-11 to Stradbally 1-08. Shamrocks supporters felt disappointed not to be ahead at half-time but Stradbally supporters could have felt likewise as they hit a good wides from frees. Stradbally started the second half brightly with a very quick goal. Stradbally were on top in the early stages of the second half. But fair play to all the Shamrocks players, they kept up the great work ethic and stayed in the game with some very good points. But every time Shamrocks drew close, Strabally seemed to be able to pick off another point and it felt like Shamrocks needed a goal, and what a superb goal it was. Colm Roche finished to the net with a great strike following good play. Stradbally responded well to the goal and on the 50th minute mark the sides were level again 1-15 to 2-12. A vital second goal came for Shamrocks in the final ten minutes when JP Lucey, with a great catch from a long puck out, laid the ball off to Colm Roche who struck well again, this time the shot was saved and thankfully the sliotar rebounded out to Padraig Hynes who calmly struck the ball into the net. It was a very exciting and nervous finish for the Shamrocks supporters and Liam Murphy had to make a super save in the dying moments of the game. Well done to all the players and management.
