Result
It was a good start for our Junior A footballers in the first round of the Western Championship with a victory over Old Parish. The final score was 2-14 to 0-08. Despite the score line it was not all plain sailing for Shamrocks as Old Parish dominated the first 12 or 13 minutes of the second half. It was in the final quarter of the game where Shamrocks finished strong and pulled away. The game was on at 2 p.m. in Cappoquin, the conditions were good, it was warm and Shamrocks had the slight wind advantage for the first half. Both teams were slow to settle and struggling to get on the scoreboard and both teams were turning the ball over easily enough in the first 10 minutes. By the 15th minute mark Shamrocks were ahead by 3 pts to 1. Colm Roche got the first pt from play, Old Parish levelled with a free and then Ed Lonergan pointed, which was quickly followed by another Colm Roche pt. Shamrocks improved after the water break and Colm Roche scored another 2 pts, this time from free kicks. Ed Lonergan got his 2nd point from play and Paidi Ahearne added another one from play before half-time. During this 2nd quarter Old Parish scored two more pts from frees leaving the half-time score Shamrocks 0-07 to 0-03. Old Parish made a strong start to the second half and quickly started eating into the Shamrocks half time lead with three pts. Ed Lonergan got another pt for Shamrocks from play. The lead was down to 1 pt when the decisive moment of the game came shortly before the second water break. Shamrocks worked the ball well up the field and Liam Motherway produced a fine strike to finish to the net. Colm Roche followed this up with a pt from play and at the second water break Shamrocks led by 1-09 to 0-07. It was after this, that Shamrocks excelled and Old Parish lost their way. Billy Hynes scored a point shortly after play resumed and another well taken goal followed, this time from the boot of Chris Murphy. Shamrocks were well in the ascendancy at this stage and Ed Lonergan, Bernie Kelleher, Chris Murphy and a Billy Hynes free pointed in the last 10 minutes. Old Parish managed 1 point in the final quarter leaving it 2-14 to 0-08 at the final whistle. Overall it was a solid performance from Shamrocks with the backs doing especially well and all 20 players showing great work rate.
