It was heartbreak for our intermediate hurlers in the Western Semi-Final on Sunday, after a stupendous effort in normal time we were defeated after extra time. Intermediate Championship Semi-Final aet Shamrocks 0-24 to 1-32 Ballyduff Upper. The final score line was harsh justice on Shamrocks who were on the cusp of a famous victory with minutes to go in normal time and it would have felt like a very much deserved victory after another great performance from the team. When the game started Ballyduff were quick off the mark having won a free from the throw in and pointing it. Shamrocks seemed a little nervous in these first couple of minutes but a Colm Roche point from play in the 4th minute settled the team. Ballyduff followed up with another point from a free and this time Padraig Hynes levelled for Shamrocks with a well taken point. Colm Roche scored a super point from a sideline. Shamrocks were now starting to get into their stride and the team were showing great intensity. Shane Roche added another point while Colm added 2 more before the water break leaving Samrocks 0-06 to Ballyduff 0-05. Ater the water break the rest of the first half continued in a similar pattern with both teams picking off some nice points. Before half time Colm Roche added 2 more points from frees while Edward Hynes, Billy Hynes and JP Lucey all got on the score sheet. JP Lucey’s point had Shamrocks up by 3 points on a score of 0-11 to 0-08 in the 30th minute. However, Ballyduff replied with two points just before half-time to leave just one between the teams at the half-time whistle. It was disappointing not to be more ahead after such a good first half display. It was once again the third quarter where Shamrocks were strongest and looked like being the more likely winners. During the first 15 minutes of the second half Shamrocks outscored their opponents by 6 points to 4 and at one stage Shamrocks led by 5 points. Colm Roche sent a free over in the first minute of the second half and during this quarter JP Lucey (2), Kieran Crawford, Colm Roche, Edward Hynes all scored from play. It was 17 pts to 14 when Timmy Organ blew for the second half water break. The outcome continued to look good for the next 10 minutes after the water break with both teams trading points, Shamrocks scoring 4 more points with 2 from frees from Colm and points from play for Colm and JP. With just less than 5 minutes to go, Shamrocks had a 3 point lead 0-21 to 0-18. Unfortunately from our point of view Ballyduff reeled Shamrocks back in and pulled level just before the full time whistle. During these last 5 minutes Shamrocks needed a break to fall our way but it just didn’t happen. Shamrocks had led for most of the game and it was so disappointing to be level at the full time whistle. At the start of extra-time Ballyduff continued to have the momentum from the end of normal time and just before half time of extra time they had a two point lead 0-25 to 0-23 and even though Ballyduff were playing the better hurling at this stage, the scoreline seemed to be still okay for Shamrocks but the killer blow came just before half time when Ballyduff struck for goal. Ballyduff never looked back and Shamrocks never recovered from it. Ballyduff pulled away as convincing winners in the second half of extra time. The final score was Ballyduff Upper 1-32 to 0-24 Shamrocks. There was no doubt that Ballyduff were the better team in extra time but Shamrocks supporters felt Shamrocks should have shaded it in normal time. Huge credit to the Shamrocks players and management on another great display where everyone showed great determination and intensity and they left everything out on the fied. The Shamrocks supporters left Fraher Field very disappointed but hugely proud of the team. The team gave us great joy over the past few weeks and it is very positive that the team showed consistency over the past four weeks. There were three great performances in tight and exciting matches against Stradbally, Ardmore and Ballyduff Upper. Well done to all involved and hopefully we can build on these performances next year. Thanks to the management team of Pat Walsh, Peter Morrison, Martin O ‘Keefe and Bernie Kelleher for looking after the team. Special mention to our evergreen goalkeeper Liam Murphy, almost 52 years of age and still going strong.

The players will need to rest and recover this week but will then quickly need to refocus attention on the Junior A Football championship which will start in early September. Shamrocks have a tough group to try to come out of as we bid to retain the Western championship.
